Special Education Degree

A special education degree is a degree above and beyond that of a standard education degree. While some bachelor degree programs might allow for a concentration of special education within their education programs, it is not until the master's level and beyond that the real core of special needs education is developed. On top of that, many states require an advanced degree and hours of teaching before a person can qualify to be a licensed special education professional.

The field of special education focuses on working with students who are physically, emotionally or mentally disabled. This work can occur in a number of settings. The majority of professionals with a special education degree work in the school system, especially in the public school systems. Depending on the degree, this work might take on several different forms. There is a high demand for special education professionals who work in the classroom, either in special education classrooms or inclusive classrooms. They would design and teach individual lessons and help students with their assignments.

Not all teaching is confined to the classroom. Students with special needs might require assistance outside of the classroom environment, such as in a hospital, at a learning center or at a juvenile correction facility. Professionals interested in earning a special education degree need to be prepared to work in a variety of settings. Considering that students will need help with a wide range of academic subjects and with life skills, the more diverse the professional's background-including their education-the more effective they will be.

Teachers who are looking to affect special education policy on a higher level than that of the classroom will want to attain a doctorate degree. A doctorate degree allows professionals to gain jobs at the administrative level where they can take leadership roles in their industry. They might work on improving special education policies at the school, district, state or even national level. A doctorate degree is also required to go into the academic research field.
